Day 2 - State Track & Field Championships

It's Saturday, May 23rd, and the 2nd day of competition for the Alaska State Track & Field Championships was under way. One of the first running races of the day was the 4X800 meter relay race which the Lathrop girls team had won last week for Region 6. Here's Megan on her first lap as the 2nd runner on the team...........

Heather was once again the anchor and here she is in 3rd place on her first lap.........

Below, Heather on her 2nd lap and the leader. She was so explosive on her leg.....it was so amazing!!! I was holding my breath as Heather was nursing an injury and as everyone knows, the race isn't over until it's over.

The Lathrop girls win the 4X800 meter relay race at State....it was so exciting! Each one broke their personal best (PR) for an 800 and ended up breaking the Lathrop school record by 25 seconds! Their finishing time was 9:44.89, coming in 5 seconds ahead of the 2nd place team. Some happy team photos...........

Later that afternoon, Heather competed in the 800 meter individual race. Here the contestants are being introduced........Heather is still sitting the 5th chair in from the left.

Heather ended up placing 4th in a time of 2:22.61. For the Edic sisters, they both did very well. Their relay team taking State, and then Heather medaling in every event she competed in. (Recap--3200m - 3rd place, 4X800m - 1st place, and the 800m - 4th place.) The Fairbanks Daily News Miner also had a picture of the girls right after Heather finished. The picture is showing Heather emotional being hugged by her friend and fellow senior/graduate Rosemary with Megan and her "big" hair looking on. 2009 State 3200 Meter Championship - May 22

On Friday, the championship race was held for the 3200 meter run (8 laps around the track.) Here's Heather on Lap 2 in 5th place with the leaders. The 1st and 2nd places in this picture ended up finishing 1st and 2nd respectfully. The battle throughout the remainder of the race was really for 3rd place.

The next few pictures are Heather and Chloe from Kodiak competing for 3rd place on different laps.

On the final lap below, Heather was leading but Christi Schmitz from North Pole was gaining on Chloe and Heather through the last turn. It really came down to the last 50-100 meters.

Heather did place 3rd with a time of 11:37.22.

Heather's Family Graduation Party - May 16

So after Track Regionals were done, we all headed back home for the big BBQ and celebration for Heather's graduation. Heather requested Steve's special cake. It's the kind that you can't really decorate as it has cool whip on top but Aunt Kristin found some graduation confetti that added decor and every once in a while provided entertainment when someone would find themselves eating some.

Everyone below watching the DVD that was playing before the graduation ceremony started. For some of us it was repeat but the graduates didn't get to see it graduation night so we had to have a replay. (At the senior graduation party that night, each senior received a personal copy.) The seniors were encouraged to provide baby pictures and misc. other pictures taken during the senior year. It was well put together and more fun watching it with Heather.

My friend Cathy and her son showed up at the house after a violin recital and proceeded to lock her keys in her car. Uncle Michael, Daddy and Steve made an attempt but the "expert" was quickly called in. It took quite a long time for even him to break into Cathy's car.

Day 2 of Region VI Track Competition

Okay so I am definately behind in my postings; I suppose I could say my excuse was family in town, recovery, the State track meet, a working trip to LA, a fishing trip in Homer and now just trying to catchup. Well tonight the 4X800 meter Lathrop girls team got recognized by the School District Assembly for winning the State Championship; however, I can't post the pictures yet as I am still trying to get to the State Championships two weekends ago! I like things to go in order so you all will just have to wait and re-live the past few weeks. :) - guess emoticons aren't automotic in blogger.com!



Okay back to the Region VI Track Meet. Here's Megan starting out on the 4X800 meter girls relay race. Gooooooo Megan!





and the "queen" of running anchor...........Heather. The Lathrop girls won in a time of 10:12.43 consequently qualifying for the State meet.

I missed the medal ceremony of the 4X800 relays though I don't quite remember what I was doing anymore. Maybe that was when Aunt Kristin and I left the races to go shopping or was it to prep for the family graduation party we were going to have later that night? or was it the Party Palace stop with Uncle Michael to one of Kristin's fav buildings in Fairbanks? Who knows but I dont' have the picture......

So moving right along, here's Heather in the 1600 meter race. She is amazing for not having much sleep. She ended up placing 2nd in 5:21.77.

Megan in the 1600 meter race. Megan ended up placing 5th with a time of 5:55.05. Perhpas not one of her fastest races but still what a great job Megan!!!

The regional track season draws to an end. Only state qualifiers move on which includes Heather and Megan for the 4X800 meter relay; and Heather for the 3200, 1600, and 800 meter races.

A friend of one of the coach's made this cake to celebrate the end of the season which sat on the bleachers below us for several races. Our challenge was not to step in the cake, fall in the cake, bounce the cake off the bleachers, or worse yet, kick it off on to the people below the cake, you get the drift.......not be an embarrassment to Heather or Megan.

Heather enjoying the end of quite the weekend; a 3200 meter race, a graduation, a graduation party until 2am, followed by three running events the next day and to top it off she was expected to entertain and be happy at her family graduation immediately following the track meet. Thanks to all the family who came and supported her!
