Concordia and Wise Acres

In late October, Megan went to Portland for the Concordia Puma Cross Country Classic race.   With Poppop and Jean driving over to watch, Aunt Kristin and I decided to fly down to watch the race and spend some time at Wise Acres.

Not many pictures were taken of Megan running, as this Mom was too engaged watching the race.  It was so fast with lots of competitors and spectators all along the way.  Megan ran in the Elite Varsity race -- (there were three other races for girls; non scored JV, JV, Invitational Varsity and then Elite Varsity.)

Here's the start after they rounded the first corner.

And here's getting close to the end.

Megan finished 12th overall (out of 121) in a time of 18:35.7 !!!
A new PR......

Then it was off to Pendleton for Kristin and I to meet the donkeys...

and Lucy, the neighbor's hen who struts around Wise Acres like she is the Queen...

2010 State Cross Country Running Championships

Oh my goodness, when Poppop and Uncle Michael were here last week, I was reminded that my blog is so out-of-date.  So today after the Regional Skiing Championships, I thought okay....I have to get through running season as skiing season is almost over!  Now I remember why I am so far behind.  I cannot figure out how to save my pictures that they are NOT so large-sized and take so long to upload to the blog.  I think I even repeating myself now -- and using the same excuse as I had previously.  Obviously, I am not up on how to go to "the cloud" and easily do what I want to do.

So back to October 2010 before there was snow......

State Championships held at Barlett High School, Anchorage.  The first hill - two girls break away.

Coach Liz cheering them on....Megan right with the leaders of the pack.

Coming through in 5th place with the leaders.......only one girl at this point has broken away.

Megan in 4th place at this point, getting close to the end.

Coming in around the field for the finish.

The finish with all top 4 in the picture.

A happy Megan, Mom, and Aunt Kristin.

Lathrop team walking in to award ceremony.

Megan ended up 3rd place! (a controversial disqualification was involved.)

and now it's on to Oregon.......
(hope it's doesn't take another 3 months!)

The Last of September Running - Regionals

On September 25, the last of September running takes us to Regionals at Birch Hill.  The Lathrop fans await.....

And the Varisty girls are off....

The next few pictures are of the top three:  Molly, Megan and Eliza.
Taken at various places along the course.

Towards the end, the three separate with Megan at this point in 2nd place.

After the race...... "Megan, what's in your hand?" says her Mom.

"My recovery drink, MOM -- and yes, I am drinking it."  (okay so I put the picture in with the smile, the other picture was her mean frustrated -- stop bothering me Mom look.)

Megan finished 2nd overall in a time of 20:01.  The Birch Hill course is definately not a fast PR type course.

September Running - Part III - The Equinox

(Better late than never posting!  Had dinner with the Michael's last week and was reminded still waiting for Boo's deput in the marathon..........so here we go...I don't know how to resize the pictures so they aren't so big to download...sorry about that.)

September 18, 2010, the Equinox marathon begins with a cannon blast.  It was a beautiful morning and one of the warmest starts to the Equinox I can remember.

The race begins.....actually the leaders have already gone up the hill and are out of sight.  Michael says if you blow this picture up, you can find Boo, Karoline and I.

Along Farmer's Loop road near Ballaine Lake, we come out along the road for a bit before getting to Mile 2. Karoline in blue, Me in white, and Michael in the middle.

Yeah, we can still talk - -it's only mile 2!

Michael finally deciding it's not worth carring his jacket with him for the next 24 miles, runs off to Dad for the throw.

Approaching Mile 5, along the Musk Ox farm/Large Animal Research Center.

The photographer turns his attention to the musk ox.

Coming up to Mile 8, along Goldstream Road before crossing the road to head up Ester Dome.

The thing about the Equinox is that it is not the best for spectator watching, as we go off onto trails and then on Ester Dome where there are many many miles where you cannot watch.  Here's Michael coming down Henderson Road approaching Mile 20.  At this point, he has run up Ester Dome with his Aunt, done what is called the "Out and Back", down the "Chute" and completed Alder Creek trail.  We told Michael, he could leave the us at the top of the Chute if he was feeling good and then race his own race.  And of course he did!

and then many minutes later, we finally come down the road.

At the end of Sheep Creek after Mile 24, Michael must have gotten bored while running on the pavement and started lolly-gagging.  Almost at the end of Gold Hill Road, Michael turns around and sees Karoline (purple) and I catching up....he decides to lighten his load and ditch his water bottle holder..and then he really takes off again....leaving us in the dust.

Michael coming up the last little hill (which after 26 miles feels like a monster!) for the finish.

Rounding the corner and it's all down hill from here!

A L M O S T    T H E R E !!!!!

Michael finishes with an official time of 4:48:03.7.  1st in his age group and 117 overall out of 232 men.  Not bad for his first marathon.  Great Job!

and here we come..........(can you believe it's September in Fairbanks!)

"It's all down hill to the end!"

"But the finish still looks so far awayyyyyyyyy........"

We finish with an official time of 4:51.15.7 (breaking the under 5 hr mark!)  We came in 41/42 out of 210 woman runners and 5/6 for our age group to remain unidentified.

Another Equinox Completed.

It was fun having Michael along though I don't think we ever heard him breathing hard.  He has a lot to be proud of, completing his first marathon and not just any ole marathon.

September Running - Part II

The weekend of September 11, Megan's racing brought us to Palmer.  Jill allowed Karoline (another Lathrop mom and one of my runner partners) to stay at her house while she was biking in Idaho with Kristin and Gary.  Below, the start of the race behind the bleachers.  I just loved the view with the mountains in the background.

Karoline and I were some where up around the top of the 1st hill on the 1st lap.  Megan in the lead pack.

Some where out on the trail.....during the 2nd lap.

Megan moving into 2nd place during the 3rd lap.

Megan getting congratulations from her Coach Kevin and her Dad.  She held onto her 2nd place and was very very excited.

Ignoring Mom....

Oh okay, a smile for Mom......

The top 4 medalists below.  Megan's time was 19:05, her new Personal Best, which moves her to 3rd on the all time fastest Lathrop list.

On September 17th, a familiar date for some, the Salcha race was held.   Megan went out fast and took the lead....a new position for her.

It's hard to stay out in front and know what kind of pace to run.  Something this author has never experienced so I am just guessing here..........

Some where after the above picture was taken, Molly (in the solid red jersey) ended up passing Megan and coming in for the win.  Here Megan is rounding the corner to the finish in 2nd place.

Stayed tuned for the debut of Michael (Boo) in his first marathon!
