The Race Mom Missed

Well, while I was in DC for meetings over a two week period, the girls had their 2nd cross country running race on August 23. (And I guess instead of cleaning house, paying bills, catching up on work or getting back into everyday life, I am procrastinating by catching up on my blog.)

Starting the race on a beautiful August day in North Pole.

Megan....

And here's what the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner had to say................

There was plenty of excitement at North Pole cross country meet

NORTH POLE — A school record, a team upset and a missed turn — Friday’s All Schools cross country meet featured all three on a gloriously sunny day in North Pole..................

North Pole and West Valley may have claimed the top two individual spots, but the Lathrop girls grabbed the team win by placing five runners in the top 10. Senior Heather Edic (20:18), freshman Sydney Stone (21:13) and freshman Megan Edic (21:33) took third, fourth and fifth, respectively. The Malemutes scored 31 points to West Valley’s 34. North Pole (74) and Eielson (102) rounded out the team scoring. “As long as I’ve been coaching, for eight years, (West Valley’s) never been beat (in the Interior),” Lathrop assistant coach Chad Carroll said................

Lathrop Cross Country Running Begins

The cross country running racing season began on August 16 at Birch Hill with Megan in her first race running for Lathrop Varisty.

But wait, everyone was wondering, "Where's Heather?" Though she's smiling below, she was not at all happy to still be nursing her knee but then I guess keeping Robert company along the course wasn't so bad.

Megan finishing her first race...........

and then it's all about the knee. ......yes it's all about the knee.

Congratulations to Megan for coming in second for Lathrop and fourth overall in her first High School race! (Sorry about the blurry photos, guess Mom has to work on improving her digital camera skills.)

What the Girls Did While Mom was Fishing

While Mom was fishing, Heather and Megan were at FXC camp in Girdwood; hiking, running, roller skiing and sledding........

During the girls 9 hour hike on Crow Pass they stopped to enjoy a nice snow field.

Megan and Heather had to jump across many streams on their 9 hour hike.

Heather almost made it!

Heather rollerskiing on the bike path into Girdwood.
Megan practicing some no pole technique!

This is the group of athletes Heather and Megan lived with for a week!

Our Annual Fishing Trip

Well, Irene, I am finally attempting our blog. (You are a hard act to follow!) And for those of you who like us enjoy watching ravens, at some point, I'll get to posting some ravens but for now some July highlights.

Our fishing trip 2008 began late Friday night, July 11, with our trek down to ANC. On Saturday we picked up Steve's brother Mark and his neighbor Ron and headed to Seward. After much ado about hitching the boat (someone left the proper hitch somewhere,) we setup camp and topped the night off with pizza. Fishing began on Sunday and the silvers were in at Pony Cove! Our second day of fishing we each caught our limit (six each) within half day. Needless to say it didn't take too many days for us to catch more fish than Heather and Megan could possibly eat this coming winter. It seems I didn't take too many pictures of our trip but here's evidence of our success of one of our exploring days outside of Resurrection Bay. If I remember correctly, we have two Yellow-eyes (the red fish), one halibut, two Ling-cod and our limit of silvers (three each) for outside Resurrection Bay. When we travel outside the Bay, Steve calls it "fishing for Lings and Things" as one never knows what will be pulled up from the sea.

Below, Steve's brother Mark reeling in a halibut in Homer on our only sunny day.

Riley, Christopher and Steve as we head out to Otter Cove for dinner with the Wises.

We made several attempts to catch fish (and I was so confident that I could help Riley catch a silver or pink salmon) here's the big catch.......which Chris enjoyed touching. No cruelty here as the fish was successfully released and survived.

And finally, a thanks to Nanna for hosting us with dinners and a place to stay/hang out and to Irene & Matthew for boat storage!
